F for Fawkes

Professor Dumbledore’s pet.. The phoenix whose tail feathers formed the cores of the wands of the ones who couldn’t live while the other survived.. The one whose tears saved Harry from death at the hands of a basilisk.. The one to whom Harry owed his life..

Fawkes, the phoenix was one of the two magical creatures that Harry was eternally grateful to. The other being Buckbeak a.k.a. Witherwings, the Hippogriff. Harry’s first encounter with Dumbledore’s pet was unfortunately on it’s Burning day, so Harry didn’t get the opportunity to fully appreciate the vivid plumage of this wonderful bird. However, he did see the phoenix again when he was in the Chamber of Secrets, and great relief it brought to him.

Phoenix tears have medicinal properties, but to make a phoenix cry is no mean task. Because to get some phoenix tears, you need to get the phoenix first. Which is a feat only for the brave-hearted.

Fawkes was a highly intelligent bird, who often carried out various errands for Dumbledore as and when required and requested. The fact that he was immortal actually made him fearless. He could even swallow Lord Voldemort’s Avada Kedavra curse and still stay alive! Fawkes’ crooning skills are also something to sing about! Remember, in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, The Lament of the Phoenix. The soul-stirring song sung by Fawkes actually works to calm them down!

I compare this Phoenix to our own feelings of bravery and courage. When we have this “I-can-conquer-the-world” “who-can-stop-me?” attitude, it becomes quite difficult for negative emotions to sap and drain our energies. The tears that we cry, the ones which spring forth from our eyes when we see a brave deed, indeed, have healing properties; properties which heal our mind and make us stronger. And in our minds, we are in a way immortal. Coz, the soul continues to live once the body perishes! (I don’t think that line made sense, I was just having a philosophical moment! :-P)
Music as always, works as a remedy to grieving minds. When ever you feel low, a slow number by your favourite band works wonders and brings your mental state back to normal!

Hell, I would love to have a pet like Fawkes! At least you wouldn’t feel sad when the bird bursts into flames.. He will regrow from the ashes!
